Iwaya Caves is in the west end of Enoshima Island and where the beginning
place of a legend as a religious training spot. Since En on Ozunu trained
in Nara era, lot of famous Buddhist monks are trained in the cave and it
has been worshiped as the holy land by occasional statesman.
Reef around the cave is known for locals as fishing spot and magnificent
viewing spot of Mt.Fuji.
Downstairs to the sea
A few more steps from Wadatsumi-no-Miya dragon shrine, there is a really
sharply downfall stairway from the front of seafood restaurant.
If you go downward under the dark and lush trees, around becomes bright
and you will see the sea.
Here is Chigogafuchi Abyss
Its name Chigogafuchi (means abyss of servant child in a temple) has be
derived from tragedy that servant child of temple in Kamakura has committed
suicide 2 times here during Edo era.
You can enjoy magnificent panoramic view of sea and mountain from here.
Evening scenery on a clear sky day is famous and of particular fantastic.
Also it is possible to see Mount Fuji over the sea from here.
There is a white way between rocks that leads to the north. If you go this
way, you can go to the pier of Bentenmaru ferry boat and able to go back
to near Enoshima Bentenbashi Bridge
in Katase Town.

2 storied building Chigogafuchi Rest House has a viewing terrace and restroom.
Opening hours is same as Iwaya Caves and basically closed at night.
Since the Black Kite always aims at food from the cliff, so do not eat
anything here to avoid your unexpected injury. When deprived of food by
Black Kite, it has sometimes people injured due to the sharp nails and
They are not approach the people who do not have food.
The way has continued ahead between rocks, to the rocky shore and the Iwaya
There is a down stairs to the shore below the cliff and is possible to
fishing and walking on the reef. If you go the way to Bentenmaru ferry
pier, go down the stairs then turn right.
However, it is unable to enter into the reef during the high tide or bad weather, because of sinks into the sea.
During the low tide, you can go down and walk around the reef. There are
lot of tide pool and able to see marine life. The reef around here is a
lot of flat places, it is easy to walk unexpectedly, but please be careful
not to stumble over the rock.
In the late afternoon on sunny day, many people, especially couples and
friends visit here to see the beautiful sunset. The sun sets in the sea
just front of the reef.
If it is good weather and high visibility, you can see Oshima Island from here. In addition, it may mirage occurs on the sea sometimes.

It takes more than 40-minutes walk from train stations in Katase town.
This Iwaya Caves was made by erosion by waves and it become ancient religious
training place and original place of Enoshima Jinja Shrine.
